David Hamilton was born in Scotland and studied flute and singing at The
Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. After graduating he taught woodwind for one year before moving to Sydney, Australia where he joined The Song Company. He sang with them for seven years before embarking on a solo career and has become one of Australia's most popular and experienced concert singers. He has appeared in numerous festivals all over the world including
Adelaide, Edinburgh, the Handel Festspiel in Halle and of course the New Zealand International Arts Festival. His operatic work includes Mozart, Puccini, Verdi, Britten, and Wagner. Last year he returned to Germany, where he sang the title role in Mozart’s Idomeneo, and May this year in Saarbrucken, the title role in Wagner’s Lohengrin. He has sung almost all the major oratorio roles from Bach and Handel to Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius and more modern works like Britten's War Requiem.
David has performed several concerts of lieder − most recently in July, Schumann's Dichterliebe and Beethoven's An die ferne Geliebte. Also in July this year he recorded Beethoven's Scottish and Welsh lieder, and appeared with Berlin Cappella in a performance of Dvorak's Die Geisterbraut (The Bride's Ghost).
He has sung with all the major choirs and orchestras in both Australia and New Zealand and is delighted to be back in this country to sing Elgar's Dream of Gerontius. Forthcoming appearances include Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde in Neumunster, part of Wagner's Die Meistersinger at The Royal Academy in London in November, and he will be returning to Auckland and Christchurch in December to sing Handel's Messiah.
